Introducing ImagineBox
We interviewed Uri Ben Ari, the founder and president of the Athena Fund, to learn more about the ImagineBox project. In this post, we delve into how ImagineBox is reshaping education, empowering teachers, and preparing students for the challenges of the 21st century.
Please tell us about yourself and explain how the Athena Fund was established
My name is Uri Ben Ari, and I am the founder and president of the Athena Fund, a non-profit organization. I spent many years in the tech industry, and after taking my company public and selling my shares, I decided it was time to give back and do something good for education in Israel.
The Athena Fund, named after the deity of wisdom in ancient Greece, was established to empower teachers. Recognizing the critical role that teachers play in shaping future generations, as well as the rapid advances in technology, I was driven by a vision to enhance their capabilities with modern technological tools.
We launched the ImagineBox project in 2020, the first and only initiative of its kind in Israel. This innovative project leverages the latest technology to create an interactive discovery zone, equipping students with essential life skills for the future.
To date, Athena Fund has made great strides by providing laptops, tablets, and iPads, along with professional training, to some 30,200 school and kindergarten teachers in 178 local authorities across Israel. By doing so, we aimed to bridge the digital divide in classrooms and promote an engaging, interactive learning environment.
What is ImagineBox, and what inspired its creation?
ImagineBox is a groundbreaking educational tool designed to revolutionize the traditional classroom. By transforming the learning environment into an immersive, interactive space, ImagineBox uses advanced projections on three walls and the floor to create virtual reality settings. These dynamic environments captivate students’ attention and significantly enhance engagement and memory retention.
The inspiration behind ImagineBox was to make learning more exciting and effective, moving beyond conventional methods to foster a deeper connection between students and their studies. Driven by the rapid advancements in technology and the need for innovative educational solutions, ImagineBox was conceived to address the evolving learning styles of modern students.
It allows for experiential learning, where students can explore diverse subjects in a highly interactive manner. This approach not only makes education more enjoyable but also ensures that students can better retain and understand complex concepts.
By integrating ImagineBox into classrooms, we aim to create a future where education is both a thrilling adventure and a powerful tool for personal and intellectual growth.
ImagineBox leverages the latest advancements in technology to create an interactive discovery zone, building tomorrow’s life skills today.
What are the primary educational and social goals you aim to achieve with ImagineBox?
With ImagineBox, our primary educational goals are to elevate student engagement, enhance long-term memory retention, and support individualized learning experiences. By providing an interactive and immersive environment, ImagineBox is also beneficial for special education, enabling customized approaches that cater to each student’s needs.
In addition to academic objectives, ImagineBox is designed to cultivate essential skills for the 21st century. We aim to foster creativity, encourage problem-solving, and promote effective teamwork among students.
By integrating these skills into the learning process, we prepare students for future challenges and opportunities. Socially, ImagineBox seeks to create an inclusive educational setting that bridges gaps and promotes equity, ensuring all students have the tools and opportunities to succeed.
How does ImagineBox empower teachers, and what training do they receive?
ImagineBox empowers teachers by providing them with comprehensive training and innovative tools to enhance their teaching methods. Each teacher undergoes 90 hours of training focused on using and creating content for ImagineBox.
The training enables teachers to customize and share lesson plans, fostering a collaborative and creative educational environment. By equipping teachers with these skills, ImagineBox transforms them into facilitators of engaging and effective learning experiences, allowing them to inspire and connect with their students on a deeper level. This empowerment ultimately leads to a more enriching educational experience for both teachers and students.
How does ImagineBox integrate advanced technologies, and what role does artificial intelligence play in this process?
Initially, we considered incorporating VR and robotics into ImagineBox, but we found that artificial intelligence (AI) offered more practical benefits at this stage. AI empowers teachers to easily create and enhance educational content, ensuring a diverse and up-to-date range of materials. This capability keeps ImagineBox at the cutting edge of educational technology.
Artificial intelligence streamlines the content creation process, enabling teachers to develop interactive lessons that cater to various learning styles. With AI, teachers can integrate text, videos, 3D models, and voice files into the immersive environment, creating a more engaging and effective learning experience for students.
Also, AI helps personalize education by adapting content to meet individual student needs, fostering a more inclusive and supportive classroom environment. This adaptability ensures that ImagineBox remains relevant and impactful, providing students with the tools they need to succeed in a rapidly evolving world.
Learning in the ImagineBox takes place throughout the year on various subjects according to a program determined by the school and lesson plans developed by the teachers. This continuous integration of ImagineBox into the curriculum allows for a seamless blend of traditional and advanced learning methods, enhancing the overall educational experience.
By leveraging AI, ImagineBox not only enhances the teaching process but also enriches the learning experience, making education more dynamic and accessible for all students.
How is the ImagineBox project funded?
ImagineBox is funded through partnerships with municipalities, the government, corporations, philanthropic foundations, and private individuals. We work closely with mayors and education departments across Israel, ensuring successful implementation and long-term sustainability. We have strong relationships with Israeli municipalities.
We also collaborate with the Ministry of Education and engage with various departments to align our initiatives with national goals. The success of ImagineBox relies on these partnerships, including significant support from corporations like ICL. Philanthropic foundations and individuals also support ImagineBox. Donations often come from family offices and private donors who are passionate about education.
What have been some major challenges in implementing ImagineBox, and how have you addressed them?
One of the initial challenges was finding suitable spaces in schools for ImagineBox. At first, many schools struggled to allocate rooms for the project, often stating they had no available space. We initially considered using mobile units like buses or shipping containers, but these solutions had their own limitations, including permit issues.
However, once schools saw the benefits and impact on student engagement and learning, they eagerly made space for ImagineBox within their buildings. Now, schools are open to house these innovative classrooms, recognizing the immense value they bring to the educational environment. This shift in attitude has effectively resolved the space issue, allowing us to focus on further expansion.
Training teachers and developing content also posed significant challenges. Teachers needed to adapt to the new technology and integrate it into their existing curricula. Our comprehensive training programs, which include 90 hours of professional development, have been crucial in addressing this. These programs empower teachers to create and deliver interactive lessons using ImagineBox, fostering a collaborative and innovative educational environment.
Developing relevant and engaging content for ImagineBox was another hurdle. We addressed this by working closely with educators and leveraging artificial intelligence to streamline content creation. This approach has enabled us to provide a diverse and up-to-date range of materials tailored to various learning styles and needs.
Funding remains a significant challenge, but partnerships with companies like ICL help us overcome this. ICL’s support, along with contributions from other corporate partners, philanthropic foundations, and private donors, has been instrumental in expanding the project. Their investment not only provides financial backing but also helps raise awareness and attract additional support for ImagineBox.
Additionally, we have adapted ImagineBox to address the emotional and psychological needs of individuals affected by post-traumatic stress. For example, the ImagineBox donated by ICL in the Negev, near the Gaza border in Merhavim, serves as a classroom during the day and provides post-trauma treatment in the afternoons for those impacted by the conflict. This dual use highlights the versatility and profound impact of ImagineBox.
By continuously addressing these challenges through strategic partnerships, innovative solutions, and dedicated efforts, we have been able to implement ImagineBox successfully and continue to make a lasting impact on education in Israel.
What are your future goals for ImagineBox, and how do you envision its evolution over the next few years?
We aim to have 1,000 ImagineBox rooms in Israel within five years, with further expansion globally. Our vision includes creating a comprehensive digital library of educational content, accessible in multiple languages and covering a wide range of subjects. We hope to see ImagineBox in schools worldwide, transforming education and empowering students everywhere.
I’m immensely proud of the impact ImagineBox has had so far, thanks to partners like ICL. Their support is crucial, and I hope to see more companies join us in this mission. Together, we can transform education and provide every child with the opportunity to thrive.
